Monday, May 28, Memorial Day

Last night was wet and very cool here, in the low 50's. With a couple of comforters, it was great sleeping weather, but it was still gloomy when we woke up.

Mystic is about a 45 minute drive from where we spent the night and, being a holiday, we wanted to get there early so we'd get a good parking spot. We arrived as they were opening and we pretty much had the place to ourselves until about 11am, but it was quite brisk to the point we needed our jackets.

We walked around the working ship yard and saw the Mayflower II which is under massive renovation and scheduled to be relaunched later in the Summer. We took a tour of the Mystic river and harbor and got a very nice narration about its history and the history of some of the ships there. We also spent a good deal of time in their whaling museum and learned a lot about this very prosperous business that almost depleted the whale population around the world.

We had a small lunch and walked around some more until about 2:30, then decided to take the local route back to the motorhome, about 30 miles away. By this time it had warmed up quite a bit to about 70 deg.

We stopped at the New London submarine base and went through their museum. It was very impressive and very interesting. We drove through a lot of small Connecticut seashore towns, many with a lot of history behind them.

When we arrived back at the motorhome about 5:00, It was very warm inside, so I ran the generator for about an hour to allow the AC to cool things off and to charge our batteries. Right now, it's very pleasant outside and we have the screen door and some windows open. I think it will be a nice evening for sleeping.

Tomorrow we're off to points North, including a stop at Old Sturbridge Village, a trip to Marvin's house, and later in the evening a campfire and dinner with Marv at our motorhome campsite. Right now (8:25), we're watching the Stanley Cup finals on satellite TV.
